Yo Swine Flu! I’m really happy for you, and Ima let you finish, but the bubonic plague was one of the deadliest illnesses of all time!

Today I decided that if I ever have kids, I will teach them that Christopher Columbus was not the first to discover America. When Columbus arrived, there were already people living in America. So why is he given all the credit for discovering America? To be fair, I looked up the definition of ‘discover’ on the dictionary and there are two. The first was “to become aware of” and the second was “to be the first to find or observe…”. So in a sense, Christopher Columbus did “discover” America because he become aware of it, but unfortunately he is always associated with the other meaning of “discover.” Saying that Christopher Columbus was the first to discover America is insulting and dehumanizing to the original settlers of the “new world.” He wasn’t even the first European to do so; hello vikings. People should be more specific when they say discover and make it clear that he became aware of America but that he was not the first. I have nothing against Christopher Columbus. He was only the initiator for “new-world” exploitations. Page 1 of 18
